Summer is a unique time of year. Most people tend to love the summer months. However, your car, believe it or not, hates summer more than anything else. Why, you ask? Because the hot summer months are extremely hard on your car’s engine.
But don’t worry! There are several things you can do to prevent your car from hating its life this summer. Keep reading for the first three summer car care tips:
- First and foremost, make sure all your belts and hoses are in good working condition. Especially during the summer months it is crucial that coolant and other fluids are making it to the right place. Give all hoses a thorough look to make sure there are no leaks or cracks.
- Check the radiator and coolant. According to an article by How Stuff Works, “Cars are designed to run hot, but there’s a limit to how hot they should run. A combustion engine is most efficient at around 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93 degrees Celsius). But if an engine is allowed to get too hot, moving metal parts can actually start to melt and fuse together, causing a variety of internal problems for your engine — and, you guessed it, a hefty repair bill.” So always remember to keep the coolant topped off and added as a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and distilled water.
- Lastly, clean your battery. The best way to keep your car’s battery running strong is to simply keep it clean. Once a month simply detach the battery cables and wipe off the terminals.
