It’s finally here. . . almost. You know, that magical mat you’ve been wanting that would allow you to simply lay down your phone in order for it to begin charging? With the debut of the 2015 Cadillac ATS, the automaker will also be introducing the first wireless charging powermat.
General Motors worked with Powermat to develop a technology that would allow drivers to wirelessly charge compatible smartphones without the struggle of untangling wires and locating the small connection point, all while trying to concentrate on the road ahead.
“Our lifestyles have evolved in a more mobile way than ever before and with that comes an even greater need for access to power in those places where we spend the majority of our time,” said Ran Poliakine, CEO of Powermat. “Our integration into the Cadillac ATS is only the first step in the evolution of portable power in places that include your car, your coffee house and even your favorite sporting arena.”
The mat is a rubber surface in the storage bin at the bottom of the car’s instrument panel that charges the phones via an electromagnetic field. All of a sudden, that place where your loose change and crumpled receipts were lost and forgotten has a much better use.
In addition to the wireless charging technology, the ATS will include 4G LTE capability.
