Here in Florida, we have the benefit of living in a beautiful state with a myriad of activities and things to do. If you want to get to know your state better, here are a few weekend road trips in Florida that won’t require too much advanced planning.
- Augustine. Head north to this coastal city and you may feel like you’ve stepped back in time a few hundred years. The whole city has an “Old World” feel, complete with cobblestone streets, a fort, Flagler College, and more.
- Sanibel Island. For a weekend getaway that really takes you away from it all, visit the pristine Sanibel or Captiva Islands. Ride a bike, watch the local wildlife, and lounge on the beach.
- Gulfside Highway 19. Take a tour of the gulf coast. Start in Homosassa Springs to see the bears, bobcats, alligators, and Manatees. Then head north to Crystal River for lunch and more manatees. End the day in beautiful Cedar Key.
- Old Florida Heritage Highway. The Scenic US 441 that heads through Gainesville is one of the best-preserved sections of historic Florida highway. Take a drive through countryside, wetlands, around lakes, and past old homesteads.
